| In this 9th book of the chronicles of Matthew Bartholomew it is
December 1354 and Cambridge is not only preparing for the festivities by
there is a killer on the loose as well. For Bartholomew and the
university proctor Brother Michael they also have to contend with the
students electing their annual Lord of Misrule, which is the start of a
period of chaos within the College. With an attempt at blackmail and an
unidentified body found in St Michael's church there is much to do
before the beginning of the festivities. There is a further distraction
for Bartholomew in the shape of his former betrothed who has returned to
Cambridge, much to his dismay. In A Killer in Winter as usual Susanna
Gregory has woven an exciting tale set in the town of Cambridge. Along
the way we find out what actually happened between Matthew and his
former betrothed Philippa Abigny. Like the earlier books in the series,
this is a fascinating tale. The reader is slowly but surely drawn not
only into the story but also the life of Cambridge and the strange
things that are happening. With superb plotting coupled with excellent
writing this series is getting better and better. While these chronicles
are best read in sequence do not allow this from stopping you from
enjoying them. This series is surely a bonus to all those who love and
        enjoy reading historical crime fiction.
