Not much is working out for
Stephanie Plum at the moment. Her sister Valerie has moved back home
with their parents as a result of her marriage breaking up, she's
kind of broken up with her gorgeous cop Morelli, (the two of them
don't know what they want), sooner or later Ranger her sexy but
dangerous mentor will decide that he wants to call in his debts and
Stephanie knows she will have to pay up. And of course, she is still
having problems apprehending difficult fugitives. To top it all
there is an extremely eerie, scary bad guy named Eddie Abruzzi who
is putting snakes in her apartment and spiders in her car. As a
favour, Stephanie is also trying to find the missing daughter and
granddaughter of her mom's next-door neighbour.
Hard Eight is one of the best in the series so far.
Hilariously funny with lots of twists to boot but also with some
extremely surreal incidents of violence that only this series can
get away with. Evanovich really knows how to do the family angst
very well indeed without going overboard. It is welcoming to see
both Stephanie's mother and sister having small but important cameo
roles. As to Grandma Mazur, she just keeps on getting better and
better. One of the highlights of the book is the incident in the
doughnut shop car park. You have to read it to believe it. It is
priceless and so well written! One my favourite things about this
series is the relationship between Stephanie, Morelli and Ranger. I
will certainly be interested to know how Evanovich plans to resolve
the situation. I have no doubt it won't be resolved easily, but then
whenever has anything in Stephanie's life been easy? As to whether
or not Ms Plum finally does the deed with Ranger, you are just going
to have to read Hard Eight yourselves to find out! I'm not
telling! As for the title? Hard Eight spot on.
