Reviewing the Tribeca Film Festival now,
would be like closing the door long after
the horse has bolted. So I won’t. What I
will say is that it was heavily leaning towards
Mexican films and offerings from South
America. Very classy stuff too. They would
have received much more coverage if it
had not been for United 93….Now whatever
you feel about this film and for many
American it was too soon, it was good film, as a
thriller. There’s the problem. It wasn’t
a script or something dreamt up by a room of
overpaid, oversexed, studio writers. It
was real, raw and extremely painful. Too soon?
I don’t know. Too much. Yes, in my
opinion. I like my stuff pretend. But you already
know that. Next year I will bring you a
proper blow by blow celebrity shoulder
rubbing smoozing Tribeca experience –
promise.
If you write crime novels I think you
could do a lot worse than join the Mystery
Writers of America. Over 3000 members
and they cover, film, script writing and of
course books. They have categories for
overseas members and are a great source of
contacts and interaction with American
writers and agents. They are based at 17 East
47th Street New York Telephone
212.888.8171. Check them out. They are not a
mystery…
I received a book to review recently.
The Eighth Evil by Dorothy K.Morris
(publishers Virtualbookworm.com) It is
the third in the Mockingbird Hill Saga. I
froze when I realised there was more. I,
for one, will not be checking them out. This
is a monstrosity as words and sentences
are mangled together to make absolutely
sure no-one reading it has a clue about
what is going on. North and South come
together in battle, on a nominal scale.
I don’t even understand what a nominal scale
battle is. Hey, maybe it is just me and
my inferior intellect and weak cognitive powers
renders me incapable of recognising
genius and raw talent when it is laid before me.
You decide. You will need the ISBN. It
is 1-58939-899-8.
Finally, till next time, don’t forget if
you are coming to New York to check out some
of the fine mystery book shops. They are
Partners in Crime in Greenwich Avenue,
Black Orchid Bookshop and of course Otto
Penzler’s wonderful establishment. Just
slap the names in a search engine and
all the necessary info will come up, like
opening times, addresses and special
promotions. If you go to Partners in Crime, ask
for Maggie and say Dirk recommended you.
If you do go, you will not be far from the
Grey Dog coffee house in Carmine Street.
It is a winner. Till next time, enjoy
whatever you are reading or writing and
think of me reviewing books. Just when I
think it’s
safe to leave my bedroom, the postman comes calling…..
