Long-time fans of Lindsey Davis’s Falco series have been waiting ages for a Falco Companion to be published aand at last we have been rewarded for our patience. Our first introduction to Falco was in 1989 and now twenty books and twenty years later we get to indulge in not only all things Falco but also gain an insight into the author herself.
The book has not been simply written as an A-Z of all things Falco. What Lindsey Davis has done is to not only write about her background (including writing and research) but also the novels and the characters, place (including Falco’s Rome and her own favourite Roman places), time, law and order in Rome, informers and their work and a number of other interesting inter-connecting pieces of information.
Falco -The Official Companion is not like most Companion books that have been published. It is clear from the start that Lindsey Davis has put a lot of time and effort into it and we the readers are the ones who have clearly benefited from it. The book’s relaxed style draws you in and reminds one of why the series is much loved. If you are a fan of the series then this is a must for your collection. No one else could have written such an excellent book and even if you are not a fan of the series this is a first-rate example of how a companion book should be written. It is not solely about writing an A-Z of the characters but in my opinion about why the series has provided so much pleasure.
It may have taken twenty-years for this book to have been written but boy has it been worth the wait! Falco – The Official Companion will no doubt become a classic in its own right. Funny, witty and interesting to the core this will no doubt become a mainstay on many a bookshelf. If you are a fan of the series and don’t get a copy of the Companion then you are missing a treat.
