Sent to the badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran meet a CIA operative Kane uncovers plans for a devastating attack on the West.

The mission to find out where it will occur and who is behind it almost costs him his life. It also puts him on the trail of a ruthless warlord willing to stop at nothing to defeat his enemies, even destroying the world as we know it.

In a previous literary life Terry Hayes was a successful Hollywood scriptwriter with a string of hit movies to his name, something that shows in this his second novel.

The plot is epic in every sense, uniting a convincing take on international terrorism and the agencies that fight it and a highly speculative, but worryingly convincing, twist. All this conveyed in breathless action scenes played out against some of the world’s most unforgiving landscapes.

Kane is an appealing mix of indefatigable hero capable of overcoming physical challenges that would kill a regiment of ordinary humans, and believable personal insecurities. Even heroes must negotiate their childhood traumas and relationship dilemmas it turns out.

Around him is a supporting cast of CIA spooks who are themselves more than just tough archetypes wearing shades and carrying guns. Hayes writes well about the internal politics of the intelligence world and the way its operatives use their unique skills to deal with threats to national security.

Hollywood is always on the lookout for the next high concept blockbuster, Terry Hayes has written a bestselling thriller that might just be it.
