Cold Vengeance is the
second book in a trilogy about Special Agent Pendergast searching for his wife,
Helen. Devastated by the discovery of his wife’s murder, Pendergast must have
retribution. But revenge is not simple.
As he stalks his wife's
betrayers - a chase that takes him from the wild moors of Scotland to the
bustling streets of New York City and the darkest bayous of Louisiana, he is
also forced to dig further into Helen's past and learns that she may have been
a collaborator in her own death. Peeling back the layers of deception,
Pendergast realises that the conspiracy is deeper, goes back generations, and
is more monstrous than he could have ever imagined.
I had not read a book by
these writers previously, including the first one in this series, and having started
the book without any of the back story realised that I probably missed a few subtleties
along the way that may have given me a better sense of the tale. However, it
didn’t really matter in the long run as this novel something that will either
be your thing or it won’t.
The styling is rather old
fashioned; the characters dialogue, the hidden Nazi’s dispensing evil to the
World plot and rather implausible action scenes overall made me feel as if I
was watching an old Doc Savage (or similar) movie, rather than reading a
thriller. Having said that, it does have its fun side for the same reason and
does have a reasonably complex plot that is yet to be finished.
Whilst not really to my
taste, for those who have read previous novels, especially the first of this
trilogy, it is an essential read to keep up with Pendergast – although beware
you’ll need to get the last one too for full resolution.
