When Maggie Conlin arrives to collect her son from school she is surprised to learn that he has already been collected by her husband Jake. She becomes even more concerned when she finds out that the two of them have disappeared. Her husband Jake has been behaving strangely ever since he returned from his sojourn in Iraq where he was a contract employee. Samara Ingram whose husband and son were brutally killed by the West has been traumatised by the event and vows to make amends for her loss. Meanwhile Corporal Daniel Graham of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police rescues a young girl from a river and as she passes away she whispers something odd to him. The young girl’s father is a freelance journalist who was supposed to be working on a big international story. Soon both Daniel Graham’s and Maggie Conlin’s lives collide and the two of them find themselves in a battle not only to see if they can track down her husband and son but also to thwart what could be one of the biggest plots spanning from the Middle East to North America.
Six Seconds is certainly a well-written thriller. It covers what is of course a topical issue. There are three stories being told in this excellent novel and the author has managed to tell all three stories with out throwing the reader into a tailspin. Mofina has not only plotted a story that is full of twists and turns but also his characterisation (especially of the main characters) is also just right. The start of the story has an emotional depth that will resonate with many. Right from the beginning the reader is pulled into the story and the drama and tension in Six Seconds holds you in a firm grip.
Whilst Mofina manages to move effortlessly and skilfully in between all three stories he also pulls all three stories together at the end in a breathtaking and suspenseful resolution that one cannot fault. With Six Seconds Rick Mofina has written a roller coaster of a thriller that has fascinating characters, a whirlwind of a story and a richness that is well worth soaking into. Six Seconds is a tale that once picked up will be hard to put down.
